Design and Site-Specific Planning
Designed by Plum Architecture, this mountain modern guest house is carefully oriented to capture panoramic views of Moose Creek. The main living areas on the first floor open toward Taylor Mountain and Oliver Peak—two of Teton Valley’s most iconic backcountry skiing destinations. Expansive windows frame the scenery, while two covered porches extend the living space outdoors, creating sheltered areas to gather and enjoy the surroundings year-round.
Materials and Construction Detailing
Situated at the base of Teton Pass, the guest house is built to withstand heavy snow, fierce winds, and extreme winter weather. Durable metal siding and a shingle roof provide long-lasting protection with minimal maintenance.
Behind the finishes, advanced building science ensures performance and comfort. The structure incorporates Huber Zip Sheathing and Tape System along with Elevated Timberworks + Custom Construction’s signature airtight detailing—using gaskets and high-performance European sealing tapes. This approach eliminates drafts, maximizes energy efficiency, and creates a consistently warm, comfortable environment throughout the winter months.
Fresh indoor air is maintained with a Lunos ductless heat recovery ventilation system, which provides continuous ventilation without unnecessary heat loss.
Build Process and Problem-Solving
This home is the product of a true design-build collaboration between the client, Plum Architecture, Lot 19 Engineers, and Elevated Timberworks + Custom Construction. Early and continuous integration of the design and construction teams allowed us to strike the right balance between modern design aesthetic, cost-conscious detailing, and constructibility. The result is a high-performing, beautifully crafted guest house delivered on time and within budget.
Unique Aspects
-Exposed concrete slab floors on the lower level create a durable, low-maintenance finish perfect for families with kids and pets.
-A custom sauna was designed into the first floor—one of the client’s top requests for both their primary and guest homes.
-A wood stove with integrated baking oven anchors the central living space, adding both warmth and functionality.
-Timber-framed porches, built with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery and secured with hardwood pegs, showcase authentic craftsmanship while providing sheltered outdoor living areas.
-The large covered porch facing Moose Creek overlooks a small pond, connected by a simple lawn—creating a private retreat with a strong connection to the landscape.
